The Filipino Soul

Just a day or two after the ‘rage’ of typhoon Ondoy (international codename ‘Ketsana’) ravaged much of the Philippines, especially Metro Manila and the neighboring provinces, people were posting these lines from Mr Conrado de Quiros:

“Truly the Filipino rises to his finest self during trying times, the more trying the times, the finer the rising…”

The events of these days have indeed brought out the true “Filipino Soul” 🙂

I myself witnessed this firsthand: volunteers coming in to the various Relief Operations spots, donors generously giving of their talent and treasures…without expectation of thanks…just an extraordinary outpouring of help to the ‘kababayan’ in need…  The term that immediately comes to mind is ‘Bayanihan’, that ‘camaraderie’, which I think is best captured in the following image:

Even prisoners in Mandaue City went out of their way to help flood victims of Metro Manila.  More than 600 inmates volunteered to forgo one meal one day and donate their rations.  The skipped meal would’ve translated to four sacks of rice and several canned goods:
