Cory Aquino Funeral

Katotohanan, kalayaan, katarungan,

Ay kayang makamit ng walang dahas,

Basta’t magkaisa tayong lahat…

How moving the entire ceremony was, –“A People’s Farewell”– to bid a rousing yet solemn goodbye to the “Icon of Democracy” –the “Saint of Philippine Democracy”, as a TIME magazine article has put it– a rite both human and divine, for we all know how human and supernatural this EXCEPTIONAL PERSON has been…

What stood out, I think, was her having been a woman FULL OF VIRTUES –a GOOD PERSON, as many of them attested– a person that attracted precisely because she amazingly combined gentleness and courage, respect for freedom yet intransigence with what was wrong…but above all, a person who attracted people TOWARDS GOD, towards conversion… for she was a woman of great faith, of unwavering hope, of seemingly limitless love…

“I knew then she was the answer to my prayers. What I did not notice was that the closer we came to victory, which is to say the farther the prospect receded that the Marcos regime would survive, the less I felt the anger inside me. As each day passed, bringing me closer to the day I could get even, the less I felt the need for it as I spent more time with the woman who alone could make it possible.”

And so the testimonies continued…up to today, especially during the Funeral Mass, when we say goodbye to our Dear President Cory, whom we will sorely miss, for she has given us a perfect example of being a great democrat as well as a great mother as well as a COMPLEAT CHRISTIAN, offering with amazing quickness whatever came her way, including the sufferings and, ultimately, the cancer which she embraced with the same spirit with which Christ, sinless as He was, embraced His Saving Cross.

PAALAM, PANGULONG CORY! Adiós: te echaremos en falta…

Thanks, Diana & Lorybeth! The events of these days have made me cry several times… [I’m still looking for her U.P. Commencement Speech 1986, MY graduation year!!!] 🙂

her conduct in her private life strikes me as equal to or even better than that in her public life. that makes her even more endearing. i was especially touched, ma’m, by the eulogy of her security detail.
